As well all know- morning sickness sucks. But have you ever thought about how it might be affecting your teeth?
First of all, morning sickness can be an issue for your oral health because vomit is acidic. This means that persistent vomiting, if not looked after properly, can break down your outer tooth structures and increase your risk of tooth decay and cavities.
The first thing you might want to do after vomiting is brush your teeth but that’s actually not the best practice and might make the tooth erosion worse. The best thing to do is to rinse your mouth with water to flush out, or dilute, the acids. If you’re up to it, adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water will be extra beneficial. Next, use a fluoride rinse such as a mouthwash. After about 30 minutes it is safe to brush your teeth!
It is also important to be conscious of your triggers. Hopefully morning sickness won’t be common for you but if it is you may want to keep a food diary to see what types of foods (or smells) may trigger your illness.
Hope this helps!
